Default Chips for a 2.8

Yes, I did a search!

Anyway, seems to be that 1.8's benefits from a chip. What I seem to be hearing is that a 2.8 with tip (my car) isn't worth getting a chip for. But it seems most people have the 1.8 so I can't seem to find anything definitive. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I've heard maybe 7-10 hp at the most... not really worth the money... there are other things you can do for it though. people with the 2.8 will tell you what the best mods for your car are...

some say it's worth it, some say it's not...having the tip is irrelevant unless you're going with big power (like a supercharger), except for the fact that you can get a chip for your tranny as well (GIAC's 'tip chip')...one of our users was extremely happy with his 2.8 chip from upsolute, you might want to send them an email and ask about the gains

Maybe because I have a 2.8 and nearly everyone else has a 1.8??? Damn, even when I do search for anything 2.8, 90% of the replies to the poster's topic is just people talking smack and telling them to "search". There is very little info on 2.8's in here. So, sometimes it's best to just ask the question you have. If it bothers people so much, they don't have to reply. [sm=exactly.gif]

You just "esactly'd" yourself...??

It is bothersome because there is a 2.8/3.0 sticky which includes info on chips. Now I have to pick up the peices of my exploded head off of the floor.

And there is this: https://www.audiforums.com/m_238227/.../tm.htm#239793 among many others.

From what I heard it smooths things out like the flat spot from 2k-4k I think. For the money and what it does I have heard mixed reviews. If your just trying to get more pep in your ride then buy a cai and wrap the piping and get a tip chip. That way you smooth the flat spot and get faster shifts. If you wanna go all out get what I said and a chip and exhaust and youll be slightly faster.

As it says in the link I refered to above, the money you will spend compared to the gains you get is typicaly not worthwhile. If 10-15hp is worth $500-$600, or more to you.. Then.. Well I just dont know.. Whatever floats your boat I guess.... CAI's are risky because of water ingestion, and your really not going to notice the difference between wrapped and unwrapped piping.. As it is stated in many other threads regarding intakes other than the carbino, its going to hurt rather than help your performance if you have a NA engine.. They are more of a necesity with a BT setup. If you want a louder engine and decreased low end performance with the risk of locking your engine up, get a CAI. The performance to risk to money spent ratio just doesnt seem logical.

Maybe I'll just get new exhaust down the line. At least I'll have nice tailpipes to show for it. I'll just focus on stereo and cosmetics for now..... not that I have the $$, but anywho....

True locking the engine up in flood conditions is very true, but with my a4 the fender lining and belly pan block normal water from being an issue.

Having denser cooler and more air on any engine wont HURT performance, it may do nothing down at 1000-2000rpms but the performance can only go up. The issue is with cone filters causing heat saok for turbo cars, not N/A cars. the reason to wrap pipes is to keep the metal pipes from negating the cool air by heating it up. There isnt an enine in the world that would loose power from slightly more coooler denser air. Sorry but its just not possible.

A cai wont yeild you huge gains, but will help none the less. Granted if you drive through super heavy rain without a belly pan or through 2 feet of water you may have issues, but otherwise your fine. Case and point, my fiance' has had a CAI on her honda for around 3+ years now and the compression is fine, as well as zero lock ups.
