Default Engine Matinence Question (B5)

I have owned a 2000 audi a4 1.8T for the last 4-5 months and have been taking very good care of it with regular washings, waxings, checkups etc. However just recently I have realized that it might be beneficial to wash the actual engine of my car.

When I tried using a damp wash cloth I ruined it within 2 minutes of wiping-and do not have the funds to go through over 50 towels to wipe down my engine. However, I dont think that it would be smart to use direct water spray onto the engine and the other internals underneath the hood. Is engine cleaning necessary? If you reccomend that I do keep it clean and dust/grime free what is the best way to go about doing it?

the best way is to get a dealer to steam clean it.....looks brand new after that........that is why it helps having friends in high places......brumos motorcars....
