u must have bought the wrong battery man. and read the last sentence of my 2nd post. and i slept on ur question and came up with this lol. if u have the 2.8, the alternator is below the intake towards the front end of the car because it's hooked up to the serpentine. if u saw smoke in that area, it may have been the alternator.

 

You probably burned out the diodes in the alternator.

 

It is a 1.8 but the alternators in the same general spot. So go and get a charging system test?

 

dude it's free at like autozone and it only takes about 2 min. also buy a battery that fits ur car from them

 

They are if you have a battery with the terminals on the wrong side. I have my battery in backwards (terminals in the back, just under the plasic cowl cover) because of this.

 

Thats how the battery is now.

I apparently fu#ked up the battery and the alternator.

 

Most cars have a "fuseable link" that will burn & not harm the electronics. I bet you burned out a few things, time to check everything electrical out.
