grinding?
everytime my car hits 2000 rpm i hear a slight grinding noise from what seems like the transmission ( may not be but thats where it seems like) its nothing too loud so i dont know if its somthing to be worried about maybe not enough oil in the transmission?
In all gears?
Out of gear too?
Clutch in or out?
How many miles do you have?
Hot or cold?
Grinding is hard to diagnose unless you are really specific about when it happens, how loud it is and what it is.
Thoughts:
Starter is engaged (bad ignition switch) (key does not spring back automatically)
Cold newer brake pads tend to hug close to the calipers and create a grind (It is fine unless they were put on too tight)
Wheel bearings are going out (whole wheel assembly will move into/away from car with pushing/ kicking (and now you know why people kick the tires))
Oh big one check all your little metal protectors First things first. THis one is huge on Audis. I don't know who had the bright idea of putting 100 little pieces of metal all over the car that "protect" something but they always get bent out of shape and rub something moving. I have had this grind a thousand times. In fact I think I have one right now. Good ones to check, there are moon shaped metal plates behind the brakes you touch them with a finger and they rub I swear. Also there are like 5 on the drive shaft/ axle assembly. If anyone has done anything (tires, brakes, fluids) they pushed one of these into a moving part. THink on what has been worked on lately and start there and look for little flat metal plates that serve no purpose and some moving part with a new rub on it. If nothing has been worked on, search, I would almost promise this is it, because it is always noticeable at low rpms and always sounds bad.
What else... gear oil in rear diff, transmission, transfer case
