wrong. 335i has twin turbos.
I owned an E46 for a few years ('01 330i) and was impressed with it. I can't really compare it to the A4 since it's really an "apples-to-oranges" comparison.
The 330i was/is a great handler. The straight six gives plenty of power and torque and the cabin was comfortable and a little more roomy in the back. I have yet to experience brakes like the 330i had - unbelievable.
Some of the things I didn't like about the E46 were the tire wear (sport package=unequal tire size and were directional so rotating wasn't possible without remounting), intrusive stability control which would chop the throttle if the car didn't like what you were doing and I should have waited another year for the manual transmission to come out. Cost - sticker on the E46 was around $42k. The M wheels were great looking but butter-soft and could dent with a strong look.
I prefer the A4, though, for the all-around package. Fuel mileage is a little better (I think I got around 26 mpg with the 330i) even with Quattro and its not as pretentious as the E46 was when visiting clients. I'm an old Audi geek, though... had a 4000S in college back in the eighties (how's that for showing my age). Doesn't hurt that the A4 is paid for and is easier to work on.

My last two cars were a BMW Z3 and then an Audi A4. They aren't really "comparable" but both were fun to drive and comfortable at the same time. I am currently looking for a new car and I've narrowed down to either an A4 or 3-series, with an outside possibility of a Z4. The Benefits of the A4 are the fuel economy (in 2.0T trim) and all-weather practicality. I also personally think the A4 is better looking than the 3er. The 3er is faster though (stock) and you get better feel for the road when you drive them.

Obviously you cant compare a z3 and an a4, the z3 is a dedicated 2 seater sport car. I said "similar models" are comparable.
An audi with a sport package will handle as good / better than a 3 series, and if you chip, the power is there as well, IMHO.
