Its not really hard, you might wanna try audiworld for a DIY.
If you know how to take off the steering wheel and steering column trim then its really easy, just don't use a screwdriver to pry off the connector because there is always current going to that switch, don't want you to light up like a christmas tree.

Your hand should be the first thing. It should just be pushed on there, im just saying from watching people light themselves up at my dealer. Including people explode air bags in the car.

Mar 6, 2007Watch out for the ignition switch causing electrical problems (wipers not working, no turn signals , no headlights either) on Audi A4's (1996-1997). There is a recall and Audi will replace the Ignition Switch . The problem is that if the ignition switch fails it could take your starter along with it ! Good luck getting it done though . I sat without a car for a week as there were no appointments and they had to "fit me in" !
You would think with a recall there would be better service ...

Could my starter now be out too? That would suck.

I thought you said your car wasn't a pre-97? That recall has been out for like 6 years, so it doesn't quite take high priority.

I think if you have a 97 then there is a recall. My friend had a 97 and he had his re-called.

Josh

P.S. For future reference, always post your year and engine when asking questions about anything mechanical or electrical related.
