Default Higher Compression VS. Higher Boost

Right now, I am running 17 psi on a T3 turbo with stock compression. The problem is that it seems like it takes too much time to spool, and I've lost almost all of the low end torque. (theres not very much anyway). Heres's my proposed solution; Run more aggressive camshafts to increase compression, step down to a KO4 or maybe a ported KO3 and run like 7-8 psi of boost. From what I figure, 7-8 psi of boost in a higher comopression motor would produce almost the same horsepower as 17 psi in a lower compression motor. alos i would hope the higher compression would be able to generate more torque. Please give your opinion, and help point out any holes or points i have overlooked in the matter. Thanx for your help and input. -David Kersch

Definitely an option, but with increased compression you will likely need to uprgrade some other things as well. Titanium connecting rods, or maybe even valves. That would definitely increase your low end torque, but along with will likely come some reliability issues. There is a 1.8t race engine that runs about 480 hp, but it is not really a streetable engine. That's a bit extreme, but when you start changing the internals of the engine, you do effect driveability. Hope this helps.

Now you got me thinking. You've got to be able to put a more aggressive cam in the 1.8t without having to do much else. The question would be, how much could you increase the compression without having to upgrade pistons, etc. I've been looking online for cams for the 1.8t engine and no luck. Have you seen any out there? Cams? You are hard core, I like it.

Yeah, wrong terminology, (don't tell Imolas4) connecting rods, sorry. I think he suggested that the connecting rods might need to be ugraded, among other things, when you significantly increase the compression.
