fack, I've had the damn car for 2 weeks and I'm already pouring money into it.

thanks for the help, all who've posted.
mine didn't/doesn't work either, i just replaced the stalk and still noting, there is a pump or something in the engine compartment that i think i am going to have to mess with
can you tell if that stuff is bad with vag?
and changing the stalk took all of 45 minutes, the hardest part was releasing the clips, just make sure you disconnect your battery

so the cruise works then turns off?? faultybreak peddle switch because that switches it off ( even a blown break light bulb does this ) also check your fuses

I hope it's just the switch, I really do. that vacuum pump sounds expen$ive.
I'm having issues with mine too, ever since I bought it over a year ago. Some times it sets, other times it doesn't. Usually only holds the speed for about 1 to 5 miles then shuts off. Sometimes it I can reset it, other times it won't work for days. Two weeks ago I set it and for the first time since I bought the car it held for over 100 mile trip... twice overone weekend, and now has fallen back into it's old routine.
This evening I got ambitious and pulled the lower dash down and found a wiring plug not connected to the clutch kill switch. Both the break and clutch switch have vacum lines and wires running to them, I'm thinking it may be some kind of redunency setup. I still haven't taken the car out to see if the unplugged harness solved the problem. I will check it tomorrow.

So what happened?
Mines not worked since i got it.
I went through just about the whole system following these guides:
http://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1996882.phtml

The column switched checked out fine (more or less) before and after i cleaned it. Testing the electrical the "Bentley way" in the second link, when jumpering pins 5 and 11 on the disconnected 12 pin connector i got 12v when depressing the brake pedal half-way through its travel for a short moment. It was supposed to be open i guess. According to the write up the brake vent switch is bad whatever that is. Checking the 12 pin connector is super easy btw, the glove box just rotate down out of the way. Also, when you check it, doing #10) in his sequence, i did have to have the auto in drive to get voltage, all other tests gave the same results in Dr. and Park.
..and guys, if you fix your problem post it so other people can benefit!!
Heres something thats possibly worth looking into: https://www.audiforums.com/m_145797/tm.htm
my rear fog lights are out on my 98.5 a4 tip.

mine has stopped working altogether, won't set at all now. I've been pretty busy with work lately so I haven't had time to look into it in depth. thanks for those links troy, I'll see if I can borrow a multi meter from work and try to get to the bottom of my problem. I'm hoping it's just the switch in my case, the rest of the system sounds much more expensive to repair/replace.
