Default Just for future reference re CEL on a 99 A4

So I had posted awhile back about my CEL and code P1519 (cam sensor, passenger side bank), and I got another cam sensor from a VW 1.8T motor. The numbers matched up perfectly, indicating that the parts were the same and therefore interchangeable. I put the new sensor on, and of course the CEL was still on. Various posts on here had said that it required a certain number of drive cycles to clear it, disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU, or that after driving "x" number of miles without a reoccurrence of the failure, that the light would go away. I tried all three ideas, and none worked on my car (99 A4 2.8QM). That made me think that either a) the sensor I installed was also bad (kind of an iffy idea, but possible), or that b) none of those techniques work on my particular car.

Thankfully, Yu (aka Hiwords) got his VAG setup and met me today after work and sure enough, he zapped the code out of the ECU and the light is off and staying off. The replacement 1.8T sensor worked, is in good shape and functional, and as it turned out, the code HAD to be cleared using VAG, at least on my car. No amount of miles (I've done about 2000 since I changed the sensor) or drive cycles (several per day for the last 7 weeks) had any effect, nor did resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for up to 40 minutes at a time. Using the VAG setup did the trick instantly, and while we were in there, we did the reprogram so that the car has one touch lock/unlock, remote control of the windows, and automatic lock/unlock (doors lock once the car reaches 15mph, and unlock again when the car is shut off). Overall a very productive meeting - thanks Yu!!!

My main point in posting this is to put the information up here for someone in the future who finds themselves in my position with a similar fault and a similar car. But as well, I recommend that anyone with VAG should definitely mess around wtih the coding options - you may find features you can set up that will make the car work more the way you'd like than it does as it's delivered from Audi. And finally, doing this stuff today has firmly set me in motion to order the VAG cable as soon as possible to have the flexibility - VAG definitely rocks

You have no idea what the VAG is capable of, everybody should have one at thier house as its a must have tool for the DIY crowd. Glad you got it taken care of.

your welcome jeremy. i hope i can get one of my computer nerd friends to make a keygen for this thing or something so i could sum how avoid the 99 bux and get the full version for free hehe. auditech79 do u kno how to turn on the DRLs for the b5? i found alot of info for the b6 and b5 passat but not the b5 a4. not sure if the coding is the same. plus vag says there's no response from the controller when i scan the central electronic thingy. did that for both mine and jeremy's car. hopefully ur superior skills can enlighten us. lol

Same coding as the comfort convience module except your cars don't have that module, you need to interrogate the 35 module (central locking) which is equivalent to the comfort convience module.

Props to you on the fix. Seeing as I have the exact same problem as you, I'm going to order that same part. Whats the website you got yours off?

Yep, definitely do it. I'm downloading the softare version that Yu has tonight so when my cable arrives, it'll all be good to go. Oh and don't worry, even though we met today to de-CEL my car, we're still planning to get together probably next week sometime to do a few things on the cars and probably hang out at my house with pizza, beer, and car DVDs as well. I'll let you know in advance so you can join us. If you bring a hooker for Yu, he'll probably scan your car too

Yeah, and that's a fairly limited copy. I'm gonna order the full-deal version at tax time - I can't wait to see what it's capable of. And yeah, it's nice to not have the damn light on all the time now too. Also, thanks for your reply to Yu just below, about where to query the car for the DRL mod. What we discussed and are both planning on, is to activate the DRL feature to get the insurance discount (my company offers a 3-5% discount for it), then deactivate it again after that goes into effect I don't want DRLs, but I'll take the drop in the premium lol.
