Keys Stolen... How do I re-key?
Here's the story...
My wife's purse was stolen and it contained her keys (flip out remote key among them)and home/work ID. While filing a report, the police strongly recommended that he get her car re-keyed because there has been a rash of thefts in the area.Since they have her IDs they could steal it from work or home.So, while I am trying to get a number out of the local dealership to re-key the car; I thought I would get a little better informed here.
What can be done to get a different transponder code or reprogram it so the old key does not work? Is this a DIY, Locksmith, or Dealer issue.
I figure swapping the mechanical key is only half the battle as the little thieves could still get into the vehicle with the remote.
The car is a 2004 A4.
Any ideas?

You'll have to get your key code that came with the car when you purchased it. Bring it to the dealer to get a new Key FOB cut. if you don't have the key code I think there's a way to get the code from your car. I'm not sure about that though;
find someone that is parting out an A4 and get them to send you all the locks including keys - who cares if it gets stolen - don't you have insurance?
I would love if someone stole my car, lol I would have the insurance company salvage the title and buy it back (if it wasn't to screwed up).
In the end, most likely they took all the money and CC and chucked the purse in a trash can. So I wouldn't worry to much.

Most likely you are right, but we've just been running the curse up. Lots of stuff going wrong. Do you have any good sources on guys parting out A4's? What about the transponder thingy.
Thanks
Thanks
shokan.com is one place that will have what you are looking for. but they are very spendy. you would just have to get a quote from them and see what they say - also check the classified section of the forum and over at audizine.com for people that are "parting out a #### year a4" see what you can find.
i know how you feel, and its a really really shi!tty feeling man. back when i drove an integra (LOL!!!!!!!!!!) she got stolen with my garage door opener inside. it took the garage door techs a couple days to get out and reprogram everything because i got jacked on a friday night. if i was you, i would charge it or something if you dont have the funds right now and go straight to the stealership rather than wait and get it for cheaper.
