Lifters making clicking sound
Hello:
My car has started making a lot of noise, my mechanic says they are the lifters and needs to replace them, however Audi wants like 900dlls for them, does anyone has had experiences on fixing this clicking sound.
I recalled that the noise began after i had some troubles with my alternator and had to replace the battery, after that i see that the amp meters gets low and thats when i hear the clicking noise louder, it is possible that if i have an electrical problem it could be affecting my cylinder head lifters?.
Also is there a way known that i can only change the lifter that is making the noise so I avoid expending 900dlls on lifters alone?.
Any help or tip anyone can give me it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ivan martinez

I doubt that an alectrical problem is causing a lifter problem.
Car year and engine and mileage would also be helpful.
Could also be the head starving for oil.
Is your oil pressure OK and are you using the correct oil weight and have you changed you oil on schedule.

i have the same clicks but my clicks are audible when i decelerate like if i hit the gas and let off it clicks loud and fast and as the engine winds down it gets lower and further apart in sound. The guy i work with over at nissan sed its a lifter but idk seems real weird. I have the '99 B5 with 148,000 Miles 5spd
if anyone wants to make a suggestion for me thatd be great =]

My car is 1.8T year 99, it has 80,000 miles.
The car engine does not seem to have sludge, i have had the car for about 9 months, the car does run good, but since july it has started to make noise on the lifters, i changed the oil to a 5w-30 valvoline synthetic oil.
Before that i was using quaker state 20w-50 i had a little oil level before i changed to syntethic, do you think that could had damaged a lifter? Do you think changing again to a thicker oil would quiet the noise a litte bit, or do you reccomend that i change the lifters.
Thanks

It is highly possible that change of the oil caused this clicking of lifters.
Pay attention at last number of oil marking: it was 50, now it is 30. Viscosity at high temperatures, that's the answer. It is not recommended to use oil with marking less that 40, especially in cars with big mileage (you don't want to have oil like water on high temperatures). Using oil with marking 30 will worn your engine quicker than with marking 40.
My recommendation is 5w50 mobil 1 oil (this one I use in my car and it is 180000km already), before I was using 5w40 oil and during hot day after long drive i was able to hear my lifters clicking. After oil change to 5w50 it is gone.
Also the first number in oil classification shows another marking for cold weather. In winter it is easier to start car with 5w oil, than with 20w.
So first of all, please change your oil to 5w50 or 10w50 or back to 20w50 (if climate is hot), or 10w60 (if you push the engine hard)
