Default RE: Lifters making clicking sound

Hello:

Thanks will try to change the oil before spending that much on the lifters.

I live in southern california, so the weather is not that cold, so probably will use a 5w 50 or 10w 50 probably, the mobil oil you are suggesting is synthetic or do you recommend using regular oil.

Wil try to change oil on the weekend and will post the results, hopefully it quiets the lifters.

My mechanic changed the timing belt and the tensioner but it turns out it did not resolve the clicking sound, im been having the oil swith lighiting on my table, but we have checked the compression and is ok, not a single drop on the compression, do you think the thinner oil could be causing the oil switch to turn on or is something completely apart?.

Thanks
Iván Martinez

Exactly the same problem with oil light was on mine Audi because of thin oil. When oil is hot and thin, oil pump can't create right pressure.
Use synthetic (better) or semi-synthetic oil for your car. In california you can use 10w50 or 20w50 (or 10w60 if you are driving hard, but might be hard to find one, as I know castrol and maybe valvoline produces this kind of oil).

Hello i tried this on the first week of december, i changed the oil for a valvoline full synthetic 20w-50. And the lifters making clicking noise and the oil pressure switch stopped, it was amazing as the car was running very smoothly and quiet. However two to three weeks after the change of oil the noise began to sound again and gradually the oil pressure switch has started to sound again but the car has good pressure. What do you think could be the problem and also why did the change of oil solved temporalily the problem?.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Probably sludge. Do an engine flush.

Ok i will try that now, will go to the dealer in a couple of days and ask for a engine flush, how much do think it will cost me? any especial thing they need to do?.

If that does not fix it what would be a good next step?

Thanks ivan

You can buy 5 minute motor flush at walmart or you can use tranny fluid but this will most likely cause gasket leaks and possibly clog up oil lines with chunks of sludge. I agree with one8tee it is most likely sludge.

It is not recommended to use oil with marking less that 40, especially in cars with big mileage (you don't want to have oil like water on high temperatures).

The 40 in a is the lubricating equivalent at warm temperatures. A 5w 30 will pour like a 5 weight oil but will lubricate like a30 weight oil at high temperatures.

You want to use a 5w 40 or 0w 40 synthetic depending on the climate you live in as recommended by Audi.

Valvoline oil (from what I have read) cleans the engine better then other oils... I am going to be putting a quart of ATF fluid into the oil with the rest fresh Valvoline and a new filter then let it idle for twenty minutes or soto clean out my engine... Mind you I have the 2.8 engine not the 1.8, I plan on doing this purely as a maintenance item and to help quiet down my lifters (which are not loud but I can hear them a bit)...

20 minutes isnt going to do anything. Id run it for 100 miles then change the oil again.

Thanks will try the engine flush, does this flush needs to be done by the dealer or can be done by any mechanic with knowledge of how to do it, whats the risk of doing it badly and end up with more troubles?.

Sorry maybe my question is stupid i admit it, but i really dont have much experience in audis or mechanics and just want to fix my car without having to expend the thousands of dollars on repairs.

Thanks

Ivan ...If you have sludge search the forums..also good info over on Audiworld as well

You should get 3 bottles of Auto Rx (look it up online) ..go to a local hard store and get 1 qt of kerosine

Drain 1 qt of oil and put the 1 qt of kerosine in..run your engine..DO NOT ACCELERATE..just idle for 20 -30 minutes

Drain all of it..fill with a group 3 dino (non synthetic oil) with a full bottle of Auto Rx and start the cycle for cleaning

Check Auto Rx's website for detailed directions and info on the product..it works well

hope this helps out (Im in L.A. too had the same problem..in the middle of the cleaning cycle so far so good)
