a little MAF info
just want to share my recent experience with a bad MAF with everyone for future info.
my car went into limp mode in the middle of my last run at the track tuesday night.
i heard some light knocking under the hood so i backed out of the throttle and drove home easy.
i didnt have a laptop setup yet for the recent key-com i got from jest
thanks btw jesty!
so i scanned with a generic scan tool at work. i had a P0171 bank 1 system too lean, random misfire and misfire cyl. 1 and 2
so i hunted around for a broken vacuum lines but found none. searched the forums for some MAF readings at certain rpms
drove my car with the scan tool connected watching the MAF g/s and my highest reading was 68 g/s
it seemed about half of what it should be.
called up the local VW dealership and gave them the part number with the x on the end to get the VW reman part and
he sells it to me for $69.00
then he tells me that those are acually new MAF being sold as remans.
they havent started the core program yet to have any rebuilt.
so i installed the new MAF, cleare the dtc codes and test drove agian watching the MAF g/s and seeing good number agian
all is good now. i am guessing the knocking heard on the drag strip was the engine running dangerously lean?

You had to surrender your old MAF though right? They just havent collected enough old ones yet... but must be in the process of doing so.
I'm going through the same deal with my Z28, running dangerously lean is no fun! Crazy backfiring back into the intake... sweet! My new maf for it is in the mail... they are over 400 at the dealer, for GM part! ARGH! I bought a used one for 70 bones -- but I disconnected my maf on the z28, to see how it ran... and my lord, it pulled HARD! -- you just run really rich, when you disco the maf -- but this is obviously preferable over running lean.
