Default More headlight issues...

My headlight issues started with the MIL being illuminated which was resolved by clearing the codes allowing the automatic adjusters to work. I then wanted to manually adjust the headlights higher because the beam is hitting the ground 5 feet in front of the car. Tonite, I was trying to use the manual adjust by loosening the two torx screws above the housing and using the torx on the front (when looking at the headlight housing from in front of the car, you're looking at the head of the screw) to make finite adjustments before tightening the two at the top. This got the bean to hit another foot or so ahead of the vehicle which is still unacceptable. While trying to adjust the passenger light, I noticed that there was no beam hitting the ground. When I stepped in front of the driver light, there was very little light being cast by the passenger side light. It turns out that not only is the bulb NOT in the socket correctly, but it simply won't fit because it's got a 90 degree bend that just won't fit in the housing. When I looked at the driver side light to see how it is setup, there's a cover of some kind over the light.

My question is, what kind of lights do I have?? The passenger side looks like a standard halogen but needs to be a straight housing and not a 90 degree housing. Should I assume that the driver side bulb is the same or should I try to get the cover off to know for sure. Is it possible that there were Xenon bulbs in place that were replaced with Halogens (I definitely have the automatic adjusters which I'm told signifies HID/Xenon) and if so, is there any way to tell for sure??

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm having great difficulty seeing at night and would really like to get my headlight issues resolved once and for all.

Thanks.

I did more searching and found that the means I used for headlight adjusting isn't good because I have auto-adjusting headlights. No big deal since it didn't make a significant difference anyhow. I found a pic that shows where the adjusting screws are but item 1 (in the pic) is an empty hole on my car again most likely because I have auto-adjusting headlights. It looks like my only option is to go to the dealer for a headlight adjustment.

I still need to know if I am supposed to have bulbs other than the halogens that are currently installed. If anyone can tell me how I am supposed to know, that would be great. My driver side housing looks like the one on the left:

Thanks.

More info...

I pulled the housings and found H11 bulbs in both housings. Obviously, not the right bulbs so I'm off to the parts store for the proper H7 bulbs. The interesting thing is that there is a rectangular hole where the ballast is supposed to be (the shape of the ballast) and the connectors for the halogen bulbs have been spliced on. I've seen pics of the halogen to HID conversion that show people cutting a hole in the bottom of the housing for the wiring, but there's nothing to cut on mine. My guess is that there were HID lights on the car but someone removed them.

If my guess is correct, can I buy something like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AUDI-...87768431QQrdZ1 and have the OEM HID lights that my car appears to be setup for??

Those housing have the triangle high voltage stickers on them.
They are for HIDs. Check the Sylvania site for sizing.

Well, the more I dig into this thing, the more I realize that there were HIDs in the car. The cover that is on the driver side (passenger side is missing) does have the high-voltage triangle and when I tried installing the H7 bulbs I just bought, I found that they don't fit. The socket in the housing is the wrong shape for the H7 bulb. I also noticed that the screw holes to secure the ballast to the housing used to have screws in them.

So, it looks like I will be ordering one of those kits from Ebay.

I checked out Visionbulbs.com and the Sylvania site and found that I need D1S bulbs and that a conversion kit costs about $259 as opposed to the Ebay kit for $249 (both shipped) that contains used OEM ballasts. Is there an advantage to using one setup over the other?? I like the idea that the OEM ballast will fill the hole in the headlight housing and help keep water away from the wiring but getting used parts and only saving $10 doesn't seem to make any sense.
