Default Headlight issues, 98 A4 2.8

I've been having on and off issues with my headlights. Through an uninteresting mistake, I broke the covers that separate the headlight housing from the engine bay. I drove with it for a while til I got the chance to ziptie the covers back on, but the lights went out for a short time til they magically started working again when I did ziptie the covers shut. they stayed working for around a week til they died again. I figured the engine heat roasted the bulbs and changed then, but that didn't fix them. I checked the fusebox, no luck on that, so now I'm clueless. What could be the issue, and what should I check on next? Thanks for your time.

I'm thinking the headlight switch may be on its way out. Pull the stalk back and see if the high beams work every time. If so, but low beams are intermittent, I'd think the switch is failing. DIY section has repair info.

The switch turns on the sidemarkers, would that still mean it could be the switch?

Yes. There are two contact bars in the slider inside the switch. One is for parking lights, one for low beams. The low beam bar gets warped from heavy current draw but the parking light bar is unaffected. Check the DIY I wrote and you'll see it in the pics.

Thanks! That sounds like it might be the issue then, I'll see what I can do tomorrow about it.
