Need feedback for a 1998-2000 a4 purchase...
I'm new to this forum as you can tell and I live in the US. but my question about the a4 manual quattro is as follows, what would you recommend the 1.8 turbo or the 2.8 dohc engine? pros... cons.... of each like which one is better to upgrade. Things I should look for? If you were to buy a 1.8 comparred to the 2.8 does that mean that the engine chassis is small or bigger in the 1.8 compared to the 2.8....I would really appreciate any feedback if possible, i want to be a smart consumer and not get screwed over ya know!! Thanks*
hey, there are tons of threads on this topic., especially recently. check up on them.
1.8t is a 4cyl turbo
2.8 is a v6
do u mean is the 2.8 engine bigger than a 1.8t? or vehicle chassis?
yes, a 2.8L v6 is bigger than a 1.8L 4 turbo....
no, vehicle chassis is the same.
if u want power (after modding), go with 1.8t
if u want a cruizer (something descent stock), 2.8

hey thanks for the reply.... but yeah what I wanted to know was the chassis size difference if any. if they are the same size like you said then cool. reason being that i was wondering if in the future you wanted to hook up or swap the s4 engine into one of the a4's around the same years would that be possible. I think so but not sure. So you have a 2.8 how do you like it, and have you driven a 1.8T?
S4 engine possible? Sure it is, but it's not really that cost effective. By the time you get all your parts and things you'll need you'll be in the S4 price range.
1.8T is more open to hot-rodding, but turbos can be expensive to repair.
V6 mods are not as easy/common, get slightly less gas mileage. No turbo to repair over the long run.
Take good care of either engine and it will take care of you. My '91 Passat 2.0/16V had 237,000 miles before I sold it and bought a 2000 A4 1.8T Q. VW and Audi use the same engine blocks.
