New A4 Owner, '98 A4 Quattro, Air filter causes engine to die
I recently bought a 1998 A4 Quattro w/ 1.8T, Manual Trans, 200k miles. Everything ran great until I replaced the air filter.
I found the original air filter had been torn. After replacing it, I cannot keep the engine running. It dies within 5 seconds after starting; idles smooth and then sounds like it chokes out. If I run the engine without the air box connected, the car idles/runs fine. I'm suspecting it's related to the MAF sensor, but everyone I ask seems to be confused. I've also tried a different brand of air filter thinking maybe the one I put in there was causing too much restriction. Same effect for both filters.
I'm also getting these engine codes: P0102 and P1565
Thoughts?
Other things I've been doing to it include replacing the front axels (torn boots), front, upper control arms (ball joints are all out), oil change (10w40 full synthetic), fuel filter, etc. It appears the tensioner and other components on the engine have already been replaced.
Thanks in advance,
Nathan
