New Transmission and now a new engine
My wife has a 2005 Audi A4 Automatic Transmission Cabriolet. After having it for 3 years, it needed a new transmission but luckily it was still under warranty. Yesterday she took it in to the dealer because of some noise coming from under the hood. The dealer tells her that it now needs a whole new engine ($8,500 for just the parts) and of course it’s no longer under warranty. The dealer says that the timing was slightly off and this caused a bunch of metal fragments to be thrown around inside the engine. (Sorry, I’m not a car guy but that was the general gist of what she was told). We're still trying to decide if it's worth paying for the repair or if it's time to just walk away and look at purchasing a cheap used car of some sort. My wife is a very gentle driver and typically likes to hold on to a car for 10 to 15 years. She treated herself to the A4 in 2005 after owning an RX-7 and a Miata. She has never owned a car that has had problems like this. She really thought the A4 was going to be her dream car and is just extremely disappointed that she wasted so much money on what she thought was a "Luxury" car. Needless to say, we are certainly done with the Audi brand.
I'm just wondering if it sounds like a new engine is definitely the way to go here. I guess I wouldn't expect that the dealer would rip us off or anything, I’m just looking for some advice. Thanks.

If the parts are $8500 then the total repair bill will top $10k easily. I doubt a 2005 A4 is worth that much. If you are, as you say, "done with the Audi brand" then it wouldn't make sense to drop that much coin on the Audi. The only positive would be that the drivetrain would be new (for the most part) and should go another 90k without issue.
No! Not worth it at all, if the engine is blown and does not work then think of the damage done to the turbo and the rest otheengine and parts... you pretty much will be looking to start from new again! Nd if you willing to drop and considerdropping 8500 on the new engine, then look into buying a new cheap realiable car, ' im done with thw audi brand' too trust me these cars are the most unreliable! You will stay worried with what other part will break next!
Just move on to something new. NOT AUDI

Thanks for the opinions, you've definitely swayed us. I agree, it really doesn't make sense to drop that much on a repair for a car this old and then have to worry about whats next.
Time to go car shopping......
Thanks again.

If it is bad, find an indie shop, have them buy an engine out from a yard (crashed car) and have them put it in. I imagine it won't be more than $4k total but haven't shopped for that new of an engine. Gl and I hear you about being done with Audi's.
