Newbie seeking advice !!!
The mechanic cant "look" at the clutch to see if it needs to be replaced without taking the tranny appart, and at that point, even if its not in bad shape it would be worthwhile to change anyway because most of the cost for a clutch job is the labor taking it appart and putting it back together. Sounds like he is just telling you that to shut you up.. But if most other audi's clutches engage at that point, i wouldnt worry about it. Ive heard of many people on original clutches past 100k miles.
the 5th gear test always works to test clutches
from neutral...go straight in 5th..and release the clutch slowly as if you would be in 1st
if the car dies, clutch is fine
if the engine still runs.....save some doe for a new clutch
Try it before you make the deal!!

the 1.8 motor was not available in 1996, you might want to research what this dealer is telling you a bit further, the 2.8 however was available, maybe its a 97?
