Has anyone had to buy a transmission for the A4 1.8 or does the fluid and filter just need to be changed 75k

Could be the shifter, transmission control unit, or the transmission. The transmission is in safe mode, but reverse should work as will 4th gear. this needs a vagcom and diagnostics of the solenoids and TCU.

 

no no he has a tip trust me i had the same problem.... that sux man this is going to cost at least 200 to fix.. it costed me that much and i got hooked up... its your multifunction switch located on the side of the tranny (driver side) before you take it anywhere get under your car and see if you can clean it first it might just have water in it... if it does dry it out clean it then connect it back... if this does not work then you have to get it replaced...btw when all your gears light up that means your tranny is in limp mode.. good luck.... I highly reccomend you fix this because you are slamming it into gear everytime you put it into gear (hence the lound thud and clanging)....bad for your tranny, if you dont fix this expect to have to get a new tranny
