I have a 98 a4 1.8t quattro manual.

I've noticed within the past couple days im getting a water leak, now I know my water pump leaks just a tad bit, maybe a drop a night, (already tried to reseal it once, but the second time I bought the expensive gasket, and tq'ed everthing perfectly.. after that I said **** it.. i'll just add a cup of water to it every month..

Anyways now im getting a bigger leak by the water temp sensor by the back of the engine, Here is the picture, and yes my water reservor was low so I know its leaking and not just the a/c...

the ect gasket may be leaking. or where the tube connects that large o ring leaks to

 

What exactly is that piece? what does it do?

I'd like to get the right seal...

I hadd a leak.. and it turned out to be my washer fluid. The connector from the tank to the headlight jets was leaking. I found I fixed it when I had to take my front bumper off.. its was easy, almost to easy... But thats only if thats your problem.. My leak was near the front of the engine.

 

My water leak is clearly from that area, let me show you guys a better picture.
