Default Oil leak 14 12v 2.8 where oil filter is screwed into...help

hey guys

I have a pretty drippy oil leak coming from where the oil filter is screwed in. There is a box and it is leaking from the box, not exactly where the oil filter is screwed into ( it isnt becasue the filter is loose) but just from the middle of the metal box it is connected to.

I originally thought it was the lower oil pan gasket but now with the UV dye and a black light i can see it is coming from the area above the pan where the filter is connected to...

What is this box? Is it a gasket in this box?

Thanks

The box is the oil cooler. At work, we I actually had a Beetle come in with the exact same problem.

There's a nut that screws onto the filter mounting stud. Its supposed to be torqued to 25ft/lbs. Take the filter off and see if the nut is loose, because if it is, it allows some play between the block and the oil cooler. Hope that helps.

Or if its not loose the o ring behind may have failed. Just remove the nut. Slide the oil cooler off. You may have to remove the coolant lines to get it off. And replace the o ring.

Hey guys thanks for the replies!

It turned out to be the oil pressure switch dripping onto the oil cooler

who knew a 13 dollar part could cause so much oil to leak out!!

Thanks
