I dunno what kind of manual you are refering to but in the owners manual it says to use 5w40 synthetic. Use castrol syntec/mobile 1/amsoil/royal purple. Why? Because they are the only ones that are recomended by the experts/audi. 0w30 wouldnt be terrible im sure, but with spring coming up i think 5w40 would be best, especialy if you dont have major mods. Make sure the bigger oil filter is used, places other than online and the dealer dont carry it... So either change it yourself or have audi do it.

It says " If engine oil visocity grade 5w40 is not available, you can also use 5w30", so id stick with one of those. Also make sure whichever brand you get says "VW502 00" or "VW500 00" or "VW501 01" on the back.

Not true. The owners manual says the oil that was first put into our cars is 0w30 for all temp ranges. Then it says if this kind is not available use 5w30 or 5w40. It says use a synthetic or a high quality petroleum. Also if you know that it uses synthetic than use it. I bought my car used and I dont think it had synthetic in it so I use Valvoline 5w30 non synthetic.

I would choose a brand and then find what viscosity is approved by Audi. The list has been pubplished on this forum many times.

Here is what my 2000 audi a4 owners manual says, word for word...

"The engine oil which was first put into your engine has a viscosigy grade of SAE 5w40. You can use this oil over all temp. ranges for normal driving. If engine oil viscosity grade 5w40 is not available you can also use sae 5w30.."

You have a 2.8 and its probably different for you, so dont argue with me bitch... jk

It doesnt hurt to change from non synthetic to fully synthetic oil.. I read up on it lots before changing to synthetic in my other car. You should do it.
