Default ok oil question

ok i have done bunch of reading about swapping from regular oil to synthetic and they all say different stuff. this is the first oil change on this audi for me and i ran synthetic all the time in my last one which was a 1.8t, but this one is a 2.8 30v with 91k on it and its been running regular oil for i dont know how long since there were no papers on it really but the dealer put regular oil in it when he received it. So i wanna know whether 1. it is safe to just swap over 2. which kind of oil mobil 1 or royal purple would u all suggest 3. what rating oil would u suggest for new hampshire's ever changing temps 4. i herd theres 2 different oil filter sizes and the bigger one is better is this true and a brand suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
corey

ps sorry if i **** anyone off if u consider it a newbie ? cause i been reading for a while.

pps have a little clicking noise in very front of engine does not hurt performance and not causing any damage according to my buddy just wondering if anyone had an idea of what it was (buddy said possibly just the injectors). only does it when idling and low rpms as driving is the only time i can hear it.

its safe to swap, the 2.8 dont have sludge problems like the 1.8 but its still better to run the syn oil, and i like mobile one but there are many that will work just fine

Based on my research Amsoil is my top choice for a full synthetic. Read and see...

http://www.bestsynthetic.com/comptest.shtml

As for as filters mobil1 or Amsoil SDF-20, and bigger is not necessarily better read and see...

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

I know its alot to read but if your serious about protecting your engine then read for yourself and make your own knowledgable decisions.

Any synth oil that has the VW 502, 505 guidelines on the bottle is fine.
As for the filters use Mann or Mahle even WIX but never FRAM or the crap from Jiffy Lube.

I use AGIP synth oil, difficult to find but is is a European produced synth oil.
