Could be the light bulb that illuminates that display is dead. When I bought mine, the bulb behind the odometer was out - cost me one hour of labor to have it replaced. Try starting the engine and then shining a flashlight on it from an angle; if you can see the temperature display then, you just need to have the bulb replaced.
Other than that, I don't know. Maybe someone else has another idea.

I'm not sure if the switches are the same year to year but on mine you can turn that display off but pressing the button the bottom of the wiper stalk, and you can use the same button to reset mpg info, avg speed, ect., by pressing and holding until it resets. Hope that helps some.

Correct - my 99 doesn't have it. My outside temp display will occasionally not come on. I have no idea why, but then awhile later it'll reapppear when I restart the car. Probably just a gremlin somewhere that is worse on your car than mine.
your car may not be equipped with it, im not sure... if you get on the ground under your front license plate and look up inbetween the condensor/radiator and bumper, you will see a little black spark plug resmbling thing (thermo) with a wire attached to it, if you dont have one, you most likely dont have an outside temp reading.

So can anyone confirm this?
My 1998 A4 Avant doesnt show on the display but in the attached image which i grabbed of a vid on the net seems to show one, so i think maybe i should?
Im going to check with a torch like mentioned before also.
