Default Power steering fluid level?

'97 1.8T

First some background info...my car has been making a high pitched buzzing noise when I turn sharply at high speeds. So I went to check the power steering fluid level, and the dipstick is completely snapped off the cap. I also went to order a new dipstick at the dealer today, but they didn't have any in stock and it'll be awhile before it comes in.

My question: Can anyone describe exactly where the level of power steering fluid should be in the reservoir? It might be helpful just to measure how long the dipsick is and where the min/max markings are relative to the top. I'm pretty sure I don't have enough, b/c the level looks really low. Thanks in advance!

If you pull the black shroud off, there are two lines on it. The higher one is the max, and the lower one is the min level. I mean, just in case you didn't figure it out on your own...

I took my shroud off and stuck it in my trunk for better weight distribution!

Thanks man, I never would have noticed that! I just assumed the dipstick was the only way to tell.

Nope, if you don't have the dipstick the world will end!
