Default Radio etc.

Hi, i was wondering if it was normal for the radio to die when the car is not running. The radio works fine (although it does not read the cd changer half the time) but the tape adapter works so i can listen to my ipod. But if i am somewhere and i want to listen to the radio or even my ipod it won't let me without turning the engine on. So is this normal? is there a way i can play music (preferably loudly) without the engine on? All the lights work fine, full brightness but the radio just dies as in volume. It does not shut off or go blank the music is playing... just really really softly. thanks in advance. (96' 2.8l v6 with (the delta cc radio i think)).

Try turning it up a whole bunch, or maybe the volume on your ipod is too low??

sounds like the surrounding audio control.like when you roll down the windows, the radio notices the noise and raises the volume.let me check something.
