Hi guys this is my first time posting here and i really need some help. I had a major oil leak on my 96 2.8 (12V) A4.
I took the valve cover off and i spotted that the leak was comming from the Cam position sensor (back of the head in driver side).
I took the sensor cap off and i notice tnat there was a lot of Oil. Then i saw the camshaft seal and i removed a little ring from it, it wasnt the complete seal, it was like a smaller Oil ring insert it has, and as i thought it was broken and like twisted, so im guessing they put it it wrong and when i got in the freeway it just snapped. The question is, can i get that little ring by itself? or do i have to buy the camshaft seal?. And also, can i change the camshaft seal with out taking the camshaft and the head off? remember that it is the rear seal, not the front one. This one is inside the Cam position sensor thing.

Any instructions, advice and comments will be really appreciated.

PS: Has anybody bought the electronic manuals they sell on ebay? are they worth it?
any info on that is appreciated too.

That seal doesn't commonly leak, nor i have i ever replaced one. Go to the dealer and ask the parts guy to look it up on ETKA to see if its even available.

I guarantee you nobody else here has done that seal, un-less you're talking about the rear cam plugs?
Post a pic of what exactly your talking about so i know for sure.

 

I got it guys it was the rear cam seal and i already took it off, im just wating for the new one to arrive. Another question, a breather hose broke because it was just corroded and old, do you guys know where to get cheap hoses? or how to make them?

 

get duck tape and tape it together or u can get hose repair tape
