hi, i have noticed latly that if im standing still and turn my wheels to the left or the right they kind of lock up,or i get a big resistance, they will not turn as far as they should, but if im moving they turn all the way no problem, but i get almost a rumbling feeling through the steering wheel. is this cause my strust are bad? what can i do to fix this?

 

I have this SAME problem on my 97 2.8L.

it might be time to change the power steering fluid, have you checked the belt and fluid level??

 

yeah i was gonna say power steering. mines been like that too. i have a 98 2.8. is there strain on the engine when you turn the wheels while ur not moving? and is there like greasy buildup on the any of the belts or front of the engine mount? if so might be a PS leak. id take it to someone have it checked out. dont want that for long cause it could do some damage with all that strain to the engine. or so ive heard.

 

That definetely sounds like the power steering. It will steer find at speed, but when you get down to parkings speeds, it will get really tough. Check your fluid to make sure you have enough, but your problem may be more involved than that. You may need to replace the unit to fix it. If your fluid is low, add fluid, but you may find that it leaks and is low soon after you fill it. That stuff doesn't need to get filled often (not even every year) so if you have to fill it again, you have a bigger problem than just low fluid.

Driving the car in this condition does not damage it as far as I know. Cars used to come without any power steering. They are still plenty drivable, it is just a lot more resistance in the wheel than you are used to.
