Default safest way to pay a private seller?

Ok, I've search here and google without a good answer.. so maybe my search terms are bad. Anyway, how do I pay a private seller safely and quickly? I was thinking a check, but how can I prove anything once its cashed. How have you done it in the past? It's not that I don't trust the seller, as much as this is a good amount of money to just hand over. Should I just go to the bank and withdraw 10k in 100 dollar bills..

get a bank draft, or a money order. whatever bank you use will have a record of a bank draft (or banker's cheque), and a money order has a receipt. those are the safest ways IMO. carrying around 10 g's in cash is asking for trouble if you ask me.

The bank will record the check being cashed. My bank ( US Bank) even posts a scanned copy of my check after it has been cashed by the reciever online.

my bank does the same, so a cheque would be pretty safe as well I suppose.

Well with the check, I figured I'd have to wait until it clears.. was wondering if there was a quicker way. So on the check I should just put.. Audi a4 on the note line?

I wasn't serious about the 10g's in cash, I was imagining myself swimming in it while I was typing. It's not much, but I've never had more than maybe 1-2k in cash at a time.

Get a Cashier's check. It's guaranteed to clear for the seller. That's how I paid for my Audi.

that's how I bought mine too. it's as good as cash though, so treat it accordingly. lose it, and you're out 10 grand if you can't cancel it quick enough.

I had to make $10-15k deposits where i use to work. Talk about temptation. THEY WERE IN PLASTIC BAGS FOR CHRIST SAKES!!

Thank all, looks like cashiers check is the route I'll take.

CincyTT, out of curiousity, what kind of company/job was it?

Always go for the cashiers check, safest way to do it for both parties involved. Thats what I just used to buy my new Audi.
