Private Seller, Timing Belt and Price Negotiation advice.
A seller of a 2002 Audi A4 3.0 AUTO with around 90K miles is looking for $9500 for the car. The Audi A4 has been babied, with dealer service done every 3,000 miles, and looks like a very sweet choice. Previous owners were an older couple.
The seller said the Audi dealership recommended only changing the T-Belt at 105,000 miles. But from what I gather, most Audi's get their timing belt changed at around 70-80K miles, and that's from a recommendation from Audi (not an "official" recommendation). I got a quote from a local service garage who ONLY deals with Audi/BMW/Saab and the T-Belt service would cost $980.00.
I made an offer of $8500 since the timing belt has not yet been changed. Is it odd for me to ask for a lot lower price because the T-Belt hasn't been serviced yet? How low would YOU go? Thanks!

Ok then sounds like a good deal for either price. If they dont go for the 8500 maybe try to split the cost. But they will prob take the 8500 bc they are old and the car is prob paid for so its just cash in their pockets..

Ask them if they've had the torque converter replaced. It's a known issue in these and can be a little pricey to have done. If you get a MIL that says that the torque converter clutch is stuck off, it's usually toast.

So, other than a car fax, and asking them about the history of the car (so far, they said it hasn't given them any problems, and no check engine lights have ever appeared), would it be too much to ask the seller to have a "used car" evaluation done on the car to check for possible problems?
