So I got to thinking..
I have been wanting to build a race car.. and was thinking of getting a used 1.8T strip it down for weight reduction and upgrade everthing possible.. Well I got to thinking.. why not just use the A4 I have now.. problem is that its a 96 2.8 12v.. the thing is once I get the "Race" car tuned right, and reliable enough.. why would i need two audi's? so instead of setting myself back a min of 5k for a used 1.8T A4... why dont I just get different mounts, a used 1.8T engine... and go to a standalone.. that way im not setting myself back with getting a different car body.. this way I will already have the 2.8 tranny.. any thing im missing on this? Or anyone want to throw in their .02 cents? I pretty much want a full blown A4 Race car.. and am going to have an extra 1000 a month to put into this for the next 36 months.. so I think this is fully possible Thanks in Advance!!!
If you are going for a fully dedicated track car, there will come a point where you will cross the line between what is street legal and what is not. I think a $5k setback for a used 1.8T A4 is worth it if you can keep your 2.8 A4 as a daily driver. Then you can be in style on the track and off it.
Unless you have another car to drive, then I'd say buy another car. I think the amount of time and labor put in to the 1.8T swap wouldn't really be worth the trouble when you can get a car set up for it already for $5k. If you don't mind my asking, how are you getting $1000 per month for 36 months? You take up loansharking?

i say screw the engine swap and sell your 12v, hook up a lower mileage (sub 80k if within budget) 1.8t with the full blown race stuff you want. i think that would be much less complicated than swapping out because the 96 is outdated. you will want a newer b5 with more part availability. i say for sure get a 2.8 tranny after the fact though. theres my .02
EDIT: thats some serious cash too for engine swap, standalone, supporting mods. if you have the $$$ go for it, but i dont think its worth the trouble, as satisfying and original as the end result would be.

I think $1000/month is enough to sell your A4, make a payment on an S4 and still have plenty left over for all the mods you could possibly want. This is in no way putting down the A4 (because I'm all about modding mine but don't have $1000/month), but everyone on this forum knows deep down that the S4 has more potential. Just my .02.

i agree with that.
only problem with that is.. total of being in debt.. I dont want to be paying like 5-600 a month for an S4 then try to upgrade two turbo's.. because I would have to save.. Im thinking like 1 month get a bigger turbo.. next month coilovers.. etc etc etc.. unless somebody knows of a cheap B5 S4
You could save yourself alot of time and just buy this one [sm=gears.gif]
