Default RE: Is synthetic oil better for the engine?

ORIGINAL: austindgarner

My brother has a new saab and his engine requires synthetic oil. He told me that synthetic oil doesn't break down like regular oil. I was wondering if synthetic would be better for my 1.8t engine because of the sludge problems the engines have. Can you go longer than 3000 miles between oil changes with synthetic? Synthetic oil is double the price of regular so I don't want to spend the money if it's not needed.
You can drive more than 3,000 miles between changes even with 'regular' oil, but it loses viscosity around the 4-5,000 mile mark. The max I'll go is 5,000 miles. Synthetics are far more superior grade and can go more than 10,000 miles between changes under normal driving conditions.
