synthetic oil for my 2.8?

The material is not as high quality as the Mann or Mahle. I was told this by an audi only mechanic. Mann or Mahle is the only filters to use.

To learn more than you could ever want to know about engine oils, refer to BobIsTheOilGuy.com.
I use the Wix / Napa Gold 1191 in the Audi 2.8 12V, with either a good dino oil or a synthetic. I am currently using a blend of 5W-30 Valvoline high-mileage synth and 10W-40 Valvoline high mileage dino. I vary the mix seasonally, with more 5W-30 for winter cold starts and more 10W-40 for summer high temperature protection. Dino oil should be changed more frequently than synthetic, but otherwise should be fine for this engine.
The 1.8T is a different story. I use Mobil 1 0W-40 exclusively in my 2001 Passat, with either the 068-115-561B filter or the even larger "Mann-made" Purolator L40316. Oil and filter choices are far less critical with the V6.
Most Bosch and VW branded oil filters I have seen are made in USA, reputedly by Champion Labs. If you are paranoid about oil filters, stick with Mann, Mahle, etc.

Hmm... isn't the 40 thicker, though? Audi's #1 recommended oil is 5w40... but since mobil doesn't make it, they suggest 0w40... the 40 is @ temperature, no? 40 seems to be the important # here... haha
