I currently drive a 96 A6 wagon and love it, but it's time for something new. I got the wagon with a great service history, kept up on it and had very few problems.

What can i expect from an A4, and which model is "better"? I have no problem with the basic stuff (timing belts, cv joints ect) but i'm trying to avoid other problems. Given my price range, about 10k, i'm looking at '01 2.8's and '02 1.8t's (manual trans only). Is there a difference in expected maintenance between the 2?

I have to say i'm weary of of the 1.8 cause its the first year of a greatly updated model and the addition of turbo maintenance could be costly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
