Default Throttle Body Adaptation - 97 A4 1.8TQ

OK, So I've recently had to replace the battery in my 97 1.8TQ.... now the car has an idle that while not bad isn't quite what it was pre-battery change, and I notice more some reluctance when accelerating through 60km/hr and around 100 km/hr....

Based on what I've read here it's probable I need to perform a Throttle Body Adaptation....

I've read other posts on the subject, one of which provides the following procedure;

Manual throttle body adaptation:

"The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving style. Do a TBA Throttle body adaption).

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.

2. Turn the key to the on position, the position just before the starter turns over.

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position(don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

5. Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment. During this time you may hear very faint noises and clicks. I only heard one sitting in my car, if I got out
and popped the hood I might hear more.

6. Drive the car as you always do.

Keep the key in for the entire thing. "

My question..... Will this procedure work with a 97 A4 1.8TQ, or does this model require a VAG-COM to perform the adaptation...?

Thanks in advance.

you have a non drive by wire tb. I have heard so many different ways to do a tba now that it is amazing. I have always heard that if you just get in your car and turn the key to the on position for thirty seconds it adjusts, but I dunno.

Thanks for your reply. Appreciate you taking the time to give your thoughts, however unfortunately I'm not much further ahead as a result.

Anyone else in a position to shed more light on this or should I wait until I'm next in the dealership and ask their technicians?

you have to get VAG-COM

that's the only way to do it
i went through this problem and all i did was
find someone with a VAG and follow this link
and do the instructions

Your car is not "drive by wire".

You probably just need to drive it 40 miles so the ecu is totally reset. It takes right about that long on a 97 for everything to get set right.

Thanks for the input. I'll carry non driving it a little longer and see whether the ECU works itself out again....
