FYI.....Ok, so I finally bit and had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, thermostat (and a few other belts) done. Final tally: $920 The worst part about it is that the mechanic only charged me $341 for the actual labor (!); the rest were parts (which I was actually planning on buying myself for like $300, but he ended up charging me over $500 for. It's all good, though, the Stealer-ship was still quoting me around $1400. [:@]

Anyway, my question is, what kind of oil filter do people use/recommend and is there a good weight of oil that works year-round? I think my mechanic uses 5w30 most of the time, but is it better to switch to 10w40 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter? (I'm in Jersey, so we get all the seasons here).

I use the same weights winter & summer, 5-30 & 10-30, as you. Also live in NJ.

 

im in mass i use 5w- 30 syn (amsoil)year round. use oem /mann oil filtres nothing works better

 

Amsoil huh... I use liquid kryptonite in mine....er no actualy its mobil one 10w-30 in winter and 15w-50 in summer seems to work best for me...

 

I use royal purple, same weight year round, but im in texas so it doesnt usually get too terribly cold here.

 

OEM filter and 5W 30 Mobil 1 all year around. I use to use Purple, but it's very hard to get here. My mechanic suggests 5W 30 all year round because the tolerances in the 1.8t are so tight. The thicker oil may not flow as freely to all parts of the engine. Makes sense, but I'm not an expert on viscosity by any stretch. I just figure Audi reccomends it beacuse they've got the research to back up the reccomendation.
