Tiptronic info: Late shifting after going uphill
Thought i'd post this hear for anyone that could use the info, i've been searching for it for days. My 98 A4 1.8t FWD has a problem where it shifts late after going up an incline. It'll be in 1st or 2nd and when i get to the top of the hill and flatten out, it wont upshift until 3,500 to 4,000+ rpm. It really worried me, but at least its fixable. It requires an updated Transmission Control Unit (TCU). There was a technical service bulletin about it.
Anyway, heres a lot more info on the passat forums.

RE: Tiptronic info: Late shifting after going uphill
Interesting.. They changed the coding for the TCU in 2000 which has been talked about many times (mostly by me)... But if you have vagcom you can code your early model tipttronic to the way the 2000's are. I coded mine for the old style like yours because the shifts are smoother and it eliminates the kickdown function when you are in tip mode. The newer coding (2000 and up) is much more "automatic" shifting but may eliminate what you are talking about. Ive never experienced what your talking about though. Check out Rosstech.com and search for the "Transmision coding" DIY for vag com..

RE: Tiptronic info: Late shifting after going uphill
98.5 A4 1.8T tip - same thing.... high revs in 4th on uphill. So - what happens to the tip behaviour if you change the program to the newer style ?
Does the re-program also change the short shifting pattern while in automatic ?
