Default tire question again…

ok, tire question again….
one of my rear tires popped yesterday on my way from work, i was going around 70-75 so before i stopped thing i have left on my wheel wont even look like a tire any more[:'(]. any ways today I went to the BigO tire store to get new tires (i have 235/40/18 Z rated) it took me a while to find pair for a good price, but this dude from the store wont replace my rear tires, he told me on quattros i have to buy set of 4 tires or i will have to take my wheels off and bring them in, coz they wont be responsible for any damage this will do to my transmission….
I don’t think it’s that bad and i’m still buying 2 new tires with same size and speed ratings, my front ones is worn a bit (i had them for over a year easy driving).
i will have my old tires on rear and front will have new ones.
Q: what can possibly go wrong?
???? any comments on that?

he is erring on the side of caution. you must maintain the exact same rolling diameter with quattro (in other words if you run 18s in the rear and 17s in the front, you will destroy the drivetrain.)

this is a pretty big debate topic actually. to be safe you really should get all 4. but - have i ever only replaced 2 on my own car? yes.
