tranny trouble?
Hey guys, some of you may remember that I just bought a 5-speed v6 quattro. I love it. Yes, I would have
loved the turbo better, but for now this works very well.
However, first gear is a little odd. it drives fine, but there is a slight abrasive noise. It isn't overly loud
(except if I push it hard in that gear), and it ONLY occurs in first gear. Could also be described as a whine.
Whatever could this be? Do I necessarily need a new gearbox / tranny?
Think it'd be easier / cheaper for me to repair myself, or to take to a knowledgeable Audi source
(unfamiliar with any down here in South Florida)??
Any help would be great, guys.

Well techniqually 1st gear is gonna be your loudest gear and will also wont be as smooth as other gears especially if you hold it at higher RPMS.... Does it sound like an engine sound? If everything runs fine I dont see it as an issue, unless the sound is really alarming
Keep in mind, I'm not a white-gloved driver. I know its something from within the transmission but I don't know what exactly.
I was hoping someone has heard of a similar issue so I can know what to do.
I've never owned a 5-speed vehicle, but I don't see any reason for first gear to be so noisy.
Whenever I go through first gear past say 4500 rpm, I think I also notice a slight smell from the engine bay.
I know it sounds like I'm a noob, but I guess its just hard to describe whats going on. Maybe some
tranny oil will just do the trick.

I havent had a chance to change the tranny fluid yet in the near-month that I've had it so far. I intend to jsut as soon as I
gather some cash.
I typically shift between 3k-4k rpm. All I know is that if I, say, go through the gear quick, the noise is usually louder, and more apparent.
I'm gonna search right now, but is there a certain brand of tranny fluid that's best for the A4?
