Default tricks to drain oil filter?

I went to change my oil for the first time after the service contract expired.

Used the oil filter housing drain tool and oil began to slowly drain. I left it on there for about 3min and then figured enough was drained to remove the filter housing....

wrong. About a 1/4qt flowed out onto the cross member and onto my garage floor.

Am i doing something wrong or does it just take a long time for the oil to drain from the filter housing?

The engine oil should be at operating temperature. If the tool is in all the way it should drain rater quickly. 3 minutes should be enough time.
