Default Waterpump - half or whole

I'm getting ready to do the TB and the waterpump. I've seen a waterpump half as well as whole units for sale. When is it necessary to replace the whole unit?

no advice? I'm wonder because my waterpump is beginning to make noise and I'm going to just buy and replace it as a partial unit. Any chance the cuase of the noise is due to the other "half" of the waterpump and I should get the whole unit? This will be the first time I've gone into the waterpump so I'm not familiar with how the look internally. Any advice.

the half waterpump is usually all you get anyway. The cover for the pump is what houses the impellar - and that is the half you get. You should only have to replace the whole thing if is warped and won't seal, or the sealing area is pitted or somewhow marred.
