Whirring noise from engine even in neutral
Hi, I have a 2002 Audi A4 1.9 TDI, 117k miles on the clock.
Over the last few weeks I've noticed the engine sounding 'whirry' and I'm not sure if it needs to be taken to a garage or not.
I tried searching the forum but most whirring noises seem to occur at a specific speed or gear, and mine does it even when in neutral and just revving the engine.
So, it's not really audible when idling, but revving the engine up to 2-3000 rpm makes the noise very noticeable. It is always there (when cold, after a long drive etc, and driving along at any speed) The noise only seems to change pitch with the engine revs, not with gear, speed or anything else.
The whirring sound is a bit like when you reverse an old car fast, and the gearbox makes a whirring noise.
Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Cheers

First, I would check your power steering fluid...then turn on/off your A/C and see if there's a difference...third, if you're handy and such, shut the car off, take the serpentine belt off (remember how to put it back on and the route of the belt), start car for a few seconds to see if noise is gone. If noise is gone, it's NOT your engine, but it's one of your pumps/pulleys on the front....
Hi everyone, reading the post it seems to me that it could be the same problem that I have with my car (A4 2.0 TDI). At the garage they told me it's the timing belt that needs to be changed (but reading here and there it seems like it breaks and that's it, the timing belt doesn't make noises that tell there's something wrong with it). Before going on with what the mechanic suggested I'd rather be sure it's not something else...
What was the problem with yours?
Thanks M.
