I have a 97 1.8t FWD and i recently replaced the clutch and the tranny but for some reason the second gear is not smooth and until the car has been driving for a while the 2nd gear grinds and then after the driving it becomes normal? I dont think its the syncro what else could it be?

You said you replaced the clutch and the trany?

Where did you get the transmission? Was it known to be good before you installed it?

Have you checked the gear fluid for proper level? Might want to drain it and check it for metal shavings

 

maybe new tranny fluid i got mine changed yesterday it was like a day and night difference!!!!! Try going to Valvoline or places like that the service usually cost around 50-60$ around here
