Default Is $1525 a Fair price for Timing Belt/Water Pump?

Hi Guys, I got a 04 A6 2.7T S-Line a year ago. Now it is 153K. I got a quote from a mechanic who used to be a lead tech at MB dealership. The message is pasted below. Do you think it is a fair price? I did my 97 A4 2.8Q 6 years ago, it was 800 labor only and the parts were not expensive at all.

"As far as the Timing belt and water pump it would be approximately $1525.00 + tax. This would include parts ( tensioner/belt/pulley/pump/coolant/gaskets, etc.) I would highly recommend doing these pulleys, and tensioners while we are in there. Let me know. "

thats really expensive. i got mine done for 1200 WITH the leaks fixed! cam chain tensionors valve covers and ect ect.. see if u have any other mechanic. i think 1600 is a dealer price. go to a independent mechanic who knows his audi.

agreed. did mine (DIY) for about $600. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are confident in your wrenching abilities. Where are you located. Some areas have higher average costs for service than others. Average seems to be ~$1000 for the 2.7T

I paid 899.00 + tax - 50.00 dollar coupon for my 2.8

yeah 1500+ sounds a little pricy for a non-dealership mechanic.

My Dealership wanted 1700 for the entire timing belt change (pulleys, belts, thermostat, water pump, etc)
Independent shop wanted around 1200

DIY ended up being only 600 for the 4.2l

My local Indy shop charged 350 for tb/wp, I bought the ecs timing belt kit for 300ish. So anywhere from 700-1200 depending on location.

I've had mine done twice. Shop rate is 6 hours, + parts. Kits run about $400 but it can vary -- make sure it has all tensioners and good waterpump. Obviously dealer hourly rate is higher than indie and they mark up parts more. So around $1000 for an indie and $1200-1500 for a dealer. Of course, you are also in a high priced area.
