Hello!

mine 1998 a6 rearview(auto dimming)got a broken joint.

will the 2004 a6(auto dimming, compass) fit in the size&wire?

John, it all depends on the connectors behind the mirror, for the 2002+ mirror to work you need a 6 (six) pin connector.You will have to remove theconnector cover and seewhat is there on your 1998.I have a 2000 and it should fit that. Here is a link to instructions on how to change.

Hope it helps, so far as sourcing parts ebay is the best place expect to pay $150-$200 for one with a compass.
