Hey ive been looking at getting a 2.7t a6, but today saw a good deal on a 4.2 a6. Which one would you recommend? Which one would win in a race and by how much?
both are 6 speed manual. Thanks for the help

 

Where did you find a MT 4.2? Stock vs Stock, they are very nearly dead even, however a modified 2.7t will eat the 4.2

 

I was thinking the same thing, I thought the 4.2's only came auto. By the numbers the 2.7t is slightly faster stock because it hits peak torque alot lower but as mentioned above there is alot of room to mod any turbo car over a n/a vehicle.

 

Audi never made the 4.2 A6 with a 6 speed. I owned an 01 A6 2.7t 6 speed and an 01 4.2 V8. After owning both, I would say get the 4.2. More reliable, handles better and rides better. The wider stance of the 4.2 gives it less body roll stock and is just as fast, if not faster, than the 2.7t stock, although mods are not readily avaliable like for the 2.7t.

 

I'd pay more attention to condition, mileage, and service records. IMHO, the biggest advantage of the 4.2 is not ever worrying about turbo failure. However, I've read horror stories on this site about auto transmissions. So pay attention to my first sentence.
