I am looking at a 2004 Audi a6 2.7t Quattro with 180,000 miles for $4,000 dollars. but i dont know much about the brand so please fill me in on the good and the bad and if they are good cars or not, anything i need to know, let me know thank you

 

How good are you wrenching on your own car? Or how much discretionary fund do you have to put into the car? I can vouch that the car is awesome, but that car is for someone who wouldn't mind wrenching on it and have discretionary fund to put into it. If you are looking for a low maintenance and inexpensive transportation, then I am afraid that it is not the car for you.

Things to look for...

- Last timing belt, water pump and related repair... Based on the mileage, most likely you are due for one. Expect to spend somewhere between $1200 to $1600 taking it to a shop.

- Suspension and steering related parts... You control arms, tie rods, shocks and etc can use TLC if they haven't been already.

- Conditions of turbos... Expensive replacement...

Anyways without getting into a laundry list of stuff, consider this. 180K miles is a lot. If the car has a detailed record of all the repairs, and a proper documentation of continued up keep, then I would consider it. On the other hands, I would be scared to buy any car at that mileage without the documentation.

 

What he said pretty mush sums it up, tires are expensive because you have to replace all of them at the same time ($600+ for a set).

 

That's a lot of miles without a complete service history. You better have a spare $4k to fix the tranny or replace the turbos, just in case. I'm at 195k and my turbos have a small leak and now my cats need to be replaced. And I have done all maintenance+ and generally baby the car.

 

That many miles, with no service records? Answer find a different car. It would be a safer idea to get something with records, than to buy this thing and have to put another 4000 into it.
