My side view mirrors on a 1998 A-6 Quattro have discolored. I want to replace only the glass. Do they pop off easily or do I have to break them? They are heated.

 

They pop out fairly easily - at least they're SUPPOSED to. Tilt the mirrors so that the upper-outside corner is as far out (towards rear) as possible. Then you should be able to pry it out, they are held on by a few clips surrounding the base, unhook the heating element cord and then you're free! One of the better places for replacements is just the dealer, although you can either go used or find something else. I don't know of a great place for side-mirror glass.

Is the discoloration from the heating element?

 

I'm really not sure. Mine are discolored, but i've always attributed it to the "Anti-dazzle", perhaps that's not the case though.

 

The discolorization is because the glass seperates from the anti glare stuff.
I usually get a used mirror assembly from Force Five in Concord NH (they do not sell just the mirror) and swap the mirrors. This gives me something to play with so I can see how to get things apart.

You can also try Shokan or your local junk yard.
