I have a 96 A6 Avant with remote issues. The remotes have worked for years at about 10-15 feet from the car. Now they only work when I am about a foot away from the drivers door. I have two remotes, one OEM and one aftermarket, they behave the same. I changed the batteries but still no better. I have to think this is an antenna issue. Does anyone know where the antenna is? Has anyone replaced it? I have seen other posts about the security system being in the back seat. That can't be the case in the Avant since there is no panel and it hinges to go flat. Thanks to all for the help.

Since you don't think your batteries are at fault, you might consider reprogramming the key fobs. Many Audi's...including mine have experienced this same issue. I'm attaching a link with the procedure for reprogramming the fobs. Good Luck with it and let me know if it works for you.
